While working with a conventional little braiding machine
(a design from Fraenz –https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jdi63u2LKI ), Lou expressed a wish to be able to braid a rope in any pattern on the fly .
In the conventional machines the pattern is hardware-coded in the machine track.

What we came up with was a machine that uses bobbins with a steel base.
An old Ultimaker 3D-printed was converted, where the toolhead was changed out for a moving magnet.
This allowed to pick up onn of the bobbins and slide it to a different position, then release it and pick up another bobbin.
The machine was controlled with a Python interface, sending gcode to the original firmware on the machine.
